This is the Union Pacific “Big Boy” 4005 at the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver. The shooting conditions in the museum, especially of this train, are extremely difficult. First, you have extreme backlighting due to the large window. Second, the train is black and lit only with incandescent lamps. That means you have a difficult exposure and also mixed lighting. I decided this situation called for some creative processing.

New August Painterly Pack from Flypaper Textures

I love adding textures to my photos when I want a little creative spark. Textures can be really helpful on shots taken in overcast or mid-day conditions. The fine folks at Flypaper Textures have just released a new texture pack, “August Painterly,” which has 40 new high-resolution texture files.

Photo of the Day: Fountain Motel

Here’s a snapshot (literally) from my recent workshop in South Dakota. My students and I had returned from our early-morning shoot and were walking to town to grab some breakfast. This old motel was on the corner and had a vintage style, so I grabbed a quick shot with my Nikon 1 V1 camera and 10mm lens. Read on to see how I processed this file.
