Service Advisory: Nikon D750

I just received an email from Nikon USA indicating that there is a potential issue with Nikon D750 DSLR cameras manufactured between December 2014 and June 2015. As described here, the issue affects the camera shutter and can cause shaded images.

Check your serial number here. If your camera is affected, Nikon USA will provide you with a free UPS shipping label to send the camera in for service.

Interestingly, my Nikon D750 is indeed included in the list of affected cameras. I’ve not seen anything indicative of the shutter issue in my use. Nevertheless, I will be sending in the camera for service. I encourage anyone with an affected D750 to do the same; if for no other reason than to have the peace of mind from knowing your camera has been serviced.

  1. D750 recall. Why is this happening again? I sent my D600 back and received prompt service – thanks. There was a story that the shutter was defective and I would get spots on my sensor. Now – the D750 shutter has some other problem? Is Nikon warning me that there is potential quality problem with the manufacturing process? Maybe if the product wasn’t made in Thailand there would be a quality control? Personally, I have thousands invested in Nikon bodies and lenses, Nikon has me rethinking a possible switch to Canon.

  2. If you’re thinking of switching to Canon, I’d say you’re being foolish. Nevertheless, I sent my D750 back for service. I’ve never encountered any issues with the camera, but I will have it repaired regardless. I don’t know what is going on with this particular issue, but I agree it’s odd.
    Keep in mind this:
Canon autofocus issue which was denied, then “fixed” but never resolved… and that was on a FLAGSHIP body.
Nikon has 1) admitted the issue and 2) offered free repair, including the cost of shipping to a Nikon service center
While I hate to have gear problems, I believe that Nikon is handling this appropriately.
