I just finished up teaching a four-day photography workshop in Williamsburg, Virginia with Deborah Sandidge. We got lucky and had amazing light on each of our photo shoots. On our last day, we returned to Colonial Williamsburg in the morning and we found this lovely house that looks like it came from a fairy tale.

One of the main themes of our workshop was encouraging participants to combine multiple filter/plug-in effects. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that we have many tools available to us in our digital darkrooms that span multiple plug-ins. For example, while you can create a black and white image in HDR Efex Pro 2 or Color Efex Pro 4, why limit yourself to those tools if you can use the unique controls in Silver Efex Pro 2?

For this image, captured with a Nikon D800e, I used single-image tone-mapping with HDR Efex Pro 2 on a separate layer in Adobe Photoshop CS6. I then used layers to add additional effects, including Color Efex Pro 4. The end result is a more painterly, dreamy look than the as-shot image.

The Nik Collection includes six powerful plug-ins that you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment with in concert with each other!

  1. Dr. J:

Glad to see all went well in Williamsburg. I figured you would arrive at Spring peak blooming time.

I’m on day 15 of my Great American Coast to Coast, Via Route 66, Road Trip and am having a great time. Made it from Newport News to the Santa Barbara Pier in 12 days and am taking the southern route back east. Currently in San Antonio and will head to Austin and then across to the Natchez Trace in a few days.

As I said earlier, if I can be of assistance to you in the future, I’m always happy to help as I am right next door to Williamsbutg in Newport News.
